Carl Jung on Astrology:

Carl Jung viewed astrology not as a literal predictive science, but as a symbolic system that maps the archetypes of the collective unconscious. He used birth charts as diagnostic tools in his analytic practice, proposing that time and personality are intimately connected through acausal, meaningful coincidences.

Jung’s approach to the stars can be broken down into four foundational ideas:

1. Astrology as the Psychology of Antiquity

Jung famously noted that “Astrology represents the sum of all the psychological knowledge of antiquity”. He believed the ancient deities associated with planets and zodiac signs were actually symbolic projections of universal human instincts, drives, and behaviors (archetypes).

2. Synchronicity and Meaningful Coincidence

Rather than believing the physical planets exert a literal magnetic or gravitational pull on human personalities, Jung developed the theory of synchronicity alongside physicist Wolfgang Pauli. This theory suggests that events occurring at the exact same moment carry the fundamental quality of that moment in time. Therefore, a birth chart corresponds to the individual’s character not through physical causation, but through an acausal, meaningful correspondence.

3. The Birth Chart as a “Floor Plan”

Clinically, Jung used astrology as a projective framework to stimulate patient associations and uncover blind spots. He regarded the horoscope as a dynamic diagram representing the “original and fundamental qualities” of a person’s character. By examining the chart, he could observe the specific inner tensions and natural predispositions an individual was working with along their path of individuation.
